People and stories – the book

The book 'Royal Palaces of Sweden – People and stories' tells the exciting story about the people and historical highlights through the history of the royal palaces.

The book charts myriad historical events, international influences, design trends – and occasional palace secrets. 'The room that changed a nation', 'Gripsholm's prisoners', 'The magical dining room' and 'The throne Queen Kristina left' is a selection from over fifty chapters from the palace's history.

The history comes alive with stories about the people who lived and worked at the palaces, and especially the women. Read about 'The princess secret diary', 'Mistress of Gripsholm', 'Gustav III's strong-minded sister' and 'Princess Eugénie, royal reporter'. The quote below is princess Eugénies, who was one of the first to seize the chance, when in 1858 it became possible for unmarried women to be declared legally competent.

"I bless my father's memory, for when I was still young and healthy he did not force me to marry some despotic prince who would have ruined my beautiful, independent life"

The book is not the complete history of the palaces, but charts the known and unknown treasured highlights, with the ambition to inspire you to discover Swedens royal heritage. All royal palaces are open to the public.
