Karl XI was four years old when his father died, so the country was ruled by a regency for twelve years. In the same year that he was crowned, Sweden was drawn into the ongoing European War. Following the peace treaty of 1679, the king's reign remained peaceful.

Queen Ulrika Eleonora and Karl XI's marriage had a political purpose: to preserve the peace between Sweden and Denmark. Two of their children – Karl XII and Ulrika Eleonora the Younger – eventually ruled the country.
