Erik XIV's attempts to strengthen the royal power resulted in conflict with the nobility. Marrying Karin Månsdotter and making her queen proved too great a provocation – the power elite and the king's brothers rebelled and imprisoned Erik.

Queen Karin's marriage to Erik XIV represented a challenge to society, and resulted in the entire family being imprisoned. It was only after Erik's death that she was released and granted a royal estate by Johan III near modern day Tampere.
