During King Gustav II Adolf's reign, the state administration was modernised in partnership with Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna. Sweden joined the Thirty Years' War, and when the king was killed at Lützen in 1632, his daughter and heir to the throne – Kristina – was just five years old.
